GreenHomeGuide is the inspiration of Publisher Willem Maas, who founded GreenHomeGuide to address the repeatedly heard stories of frustration and uncertainty as people who wanted to green their homes got bogged down trying to find reliable advice and sorting out products’ competing claims.
GreenHomeGuide facilitates an authentic, highly trusted exchange of experiences and expertise between and among homeowners, building professionals, physicians, retailers, researchers and authors.
"Welcome to USA WEEKEND's ThinkSmart: The Green Issue, a special supplement to celebrate Earth Day 2008. The theme is The Green House, offering room-by-room tips on how to make your home more eco-friendly."
"In the Summer 2008 issue of TIME Style & Design, TIME identified the Design 100 -- "the people and ideas behind today’s most influential design." Editor Kate Betts writes that the Design 100 is "a list that spans the globe and also the spectrum from the everyday to the otherworldly, pinpointing the ideas, designs and people who embody functionality meshed with beauty and innovation."
"Being green is not about being miserable; it's about being conscious. It's not about perfection; it's about everyone trying to do something."
"Putting a green face on your home could save you money while you help save the earth."
"How to save energy -- and money -- in every room of your house."
"To be green means to conserve natural resources and consume consciously to reduce our impact on this big blue planet we call home."
"Julia Russell started small when she wanted a greener home. She began whipping up recipes for nontoxic cleaners and weatherized her Los Angeles bungalow with insulation made from recycled newspaper. Thirty years and countless projects later, Russell has transformed her home into a model of sustainable urban living."
"Most Americans believe that dramatic steps are needed to conserve energy and reduce the threat of global warming, but they are willing to go only so far in changing their lifestyles to 'go green.'"
"Reducing your impact on the earth is not just a question of what you drive but also of what you live in. Residential energy use accounts for 16% of greenhouse-gas emissions."
"Your local home improvement store may never be the same again. In recent years, an organic food revolution has filled supermarket shelves with products like hormone-free milk. Now, growing consumer interest is encouraging a new generation of green homebuilding retailers."
"Whether you're looking to retile your bathroom, update your kitchen or just paint the family room, this site will give you plenty of options to make your project as Earth-friendly as it is beautiful."
"If, like most people, you're not in a position to build a high-efficiency, environmentally-friendly home of your own, you can still improve the green stats of your existing dwelling."
"Here’s a great resource for any home-improvement projects you may be taking on. The GreenHomeGuide is a community-based resource for advice, inspiration, and information."
"We spend 80 to 90 percent of our time indoors, particularly at home, and yet, the indoor environment could be hazardous to our health."

Willem Maas founded GreenHomeGuide in San Francisco in 2004 to help close the gap between the intentions and practical realities of a healthier, greener home.
GreenHomeGuide is a trusted, community-based resource whose combination of tips, case studies, expert Q&A articles and regional directories of products and services has helped millions of homeowners create homes that make them feel good.
As in an old-fashioned barn-raising, experts and novices come together on GreenHomeGuide. We cover the spectrum, from publishing the story of Los Angeles schoolteacher Angela Marino’s safe, healthy nursery to interviewing scientist Al Hodgson about the effects of paint on indoor air quality. Likewise, we take a community approach to our product directories, combining the recommendations of green architects, builders, designers and other building professionals with real-world reviews anyone can write—because the experts don’t know everything!
To encourage the broadest possible community participation, the content on GreenHomeGuide is free. Businesses that meet GreenHomeGuide’s publication standards advertise in our directories and sponsor our Know-How editorial topics.
A Vision For Better Homes
GreenHomeGuide believes we can improve the environment and make our homes safe, comfortable and rejuvenating at the same time. By choosing green alternatives to conventional building, cleaning, pest control and landscaping, we discover that we can have more, not less. Our homes can be better designed and more attractive; warmer and brighter in the winter and cooler in the summer. They can also offer us more of the well-being and comfort that we need and seek. And with better homes, we move one step closer to creating a better planet.
